School of Law

Student Law Society

INTRODUCTION:

The Student Law Society was set up at Stirling University in September 2008, and in one year alone had grown to the size of nearly 100 members. From mooting competitions to Hallowe'en parties, the Law Society organised a number of different events for student members; not forgetting our first ever law ball in May 2009, which was a great success with over 80 students and staff in attendance.

As we continue to build on the successes of the past year, this year's events are set to be even bigger and better, including a range of trips and services that will be introduced to students for the first time.

We will for instance be introducing a new buddying system to help first year students get settled into university, in which older students can pass on all their worldy academic and social knowledge learned from their experiences at university! This is a great opportunity for everyone to extend contact with students in other years, as well as giving participating students a great addition to their CV. Students in all years are invited to take part in the buddying, so for more information on how to sign up please contact our 3/4th year representative, Steph Jones, at stj00002@students.stir.ac.uk. If you are in first year and would like to be a part of this scheme, please contact our 1/2nd year representative, Michael Robinson, at mjr00001@students.stir.ac.uk.

Another major event this year will be the Douglas Vick Mooting Competition, open to student members in all years. This is a great opportunity to get involved in some advocacy experience, as well as extending your knowledge of the law and improving your debating skills. There will also be a number of people invited from both within and outwith the Law School to judge each moot, not to mention that there will be a great prize offered to the wining mooters at the end of the year. Applications for mooting will be open throughout September and the Competition will begin in October, so contact Jak Booker at job00001@students.stir.ac.uk for more info.

The Law Society will also be arranging a number of social events and trips throughout the year, including the Law Ball, Cheese & Wine evenings, Christmas Ceilidh, trips to Alton Towers and even more!
